About the Collaboration

The Department of Performing Arts and Film (PAF) has collaborated with the Norwegian University College of Dance (NUCD) since 2010. For the last 5 years, our collaboration has focused on staff capacity development, student and staff exchange and joint performances. In April 2016, the two institutions renewed the Memorandum of Understanding (2016-2021) and one of the mutually agreed upon beneficial objectives is: Joint collaboration in fundraising towards the Performing Arts Center customized to the characteristics of the different programs at PAF.

The Norwegian University College of Dance

The Norwegian University College of Dance is the first university college for dance education in Norway. NUCD was established with the object to offer university college education for dancers, choreographers and dance teachers. NUCD has very strong collaborative international programs with Makerere University’s Department of Performing Arts and Film, as well as a number of other universities in Europe.

The Department of Performing Arts and Film

The Department of Performing Arts and Film (PAF) was established in 1971. PAF belongs to the College of Humanities and Social Science and the School of Liberal and Performing Arts. It is one of the most vibrant units, defining the cultural identity and image of Makerere University as the only one of its kind not only in Uganda, but also in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa. PAF offers undergraduate and graduate education in music, dance, drama and film under one roof. The Department has produced renowned musicians, dancers, actors, radio and television presenters, film personnel, and performing arts managers, both on national and international scene.

PAF has also produced internationally recognized academics in the performing arts. Because of the value the Alumni attach to the Department, in April 2016, they constituted the Makerere University Performing Arts and Film Alumni Association to create a platform of giving back.
